The Science of iOS Lock Screen Semantic Segmentation
Apple's iOS Lock Screen uses machine learning semantic segmentation to isolate foreground subjects from backgrounds, allowing subjects to naturally overlap the system clock font. However, many wallpapers fail to trigger the depth effect or get rejected because of poor subject placement. Here is how designers craft wallpapers that trigger depth segmentation every time.
1. The Subject Overlap Clearance Zone
The system clock occupies roughly the top 18% to 28% of the vertical screen coordinate space. For the depth algorithm to allow overlap:
- The foreground subject must not obscure more than 30% of any individual clock digit.
- The top of the subject (hair, mountain peak, building roof) should crest gently across the bottom third of the clock baseline.
- High edge contrast between the subject and background sky is required for the neural segmentation model to draw clean matte boundaries.
2. Canvas Dimensions and Color Gamut
Design your artwork at a master resolution of 1290x2796 pixels (iPhone 16 Pro Max native resolution) with Display P3 color space to ensure vibrant specular highlights on OLED Super Retina XDR displays.
